Tinnitus is the medical term used to describe ear noise, such as ringing, that can start anywhere in the ear or start in the brain. Even though the condition is not serious and may resolve itself eventually, there are some things people can do to prevent it and cure it. If you are affected by tinnitus, there are also some things you can do to lessen the intensity of the sounds you hear.
Preventing Tinnitus
If you want to prevent the likelihood that you will be affected by ear noise, take the following steps:
Take precautionary measures to protect your hearing, such as wearing ear plugs and other ear protection when you are exposed to loud noises. Even noises as simple as those you hear while blow drying your hair are enough to potentially cause ear noise.
When ear plugs are not available to reduce noise levels, wear other forms of ear protection such as ear muffs. If possible, do not spend a long period of time exposed to the high noise levels. Reduce the volume of loud music.
How to Lessen the Intensity of Tinnitus
Since the ears are among the most delicate parts of the body and hearing is related to the central nervous system, it is natural to expect a high intensity ear noise when affected by the condition. Though there is not a magic cure that will instantly relieve the noise, there are things a person can do to lessen the intensity of the ear noise.
In order to live comfortably while affected by tinnitus, you should take the following steps:
Keep sounds around you soft. Avoid exposing yourself to loud noises, especially for an extended period of time. If a loud noise is completely unavoidable, wear the appropriate ear protection.
Keep your blood pressure under control. A higher blood pressure will make the ears more sensitive to noise. Lower your blood pressure by exercising and reducing tobacco intake. Exercise will also provide a distraction from the ear noise.
- Reduce your salt intake.
- Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine.
- Do not stress over the noise. If you think about it and concentrate on the noise, it will usually become louder, especially because the noise relates to the central nervous system and the brain.
- Get enough sleep. Fatigue seems to make the noise worse.
- Don't use products that contain aspirin. If you must take an aspirin based product, avoid it in large doses.
- Take necessary precautions to reduce stress and anxiety as these emotions will likely increase the ear noise.
- Use white noise to compete with the noise in your head.
When your surroundings get quiet, such as when it is time to go to sleep for the night, the ear noise will likely seem worse. If you can make use of another noise, such as those found with white noise machines, it will drown out the ear noise. If a white noise machine is not available, try leaving a radio on a static filled channel, or leave the TV on a very low volume.
